The Editorial Board of this year’s edition of ISHA’s own student journal CARNIVAL has decided to extend the original Call for Papers, which ended on the 30th of June, until the 31st of July, 23:59 GMT+1. Please read the updated Call below for more info.
The editorial board of CARNIVAL invites students (undergraduate and postgraduate) from all disciplines with a connection to the historical sciences to submit articles and reviews for the upcoming issue of our journal. Inspired by the 30-year anniversary of ISHA as an organization, students are encouraged to submit works which speak to the topic of commemoration, anniversaries, contested memories and narratives, and the tension between academic historiography and popular memory.
Topics include, but are not limited to:
- Nationalism and historical memory-
- Anti-colonial and post-colonial “counter-memories”, or contested memories
- Form and function of commemoration-
- Remembrance in Antiquity and the Middle Ages
- Lieux de mémoire
- The meaning of commemoration: public debates and discussion over the meaning of the past
- Depictions of history in popular culture
- Marginalized and suppressed memories (commemoration of women’s history, ethnic minorities, LGBT history, etc.)
Inspired by the Global Histories student journal, we also welcome the submission of history conference reviews, especially ISHA conferences. Please review a history conference which you have attended in the last months, focusing on how the conference was intellectually conceptualized and how it related to wider trends and themes within the discipline of history.
CARNIVAL is a peer-reviewed academic journal directed by a committee of international graduate students and early career researchers affiliated with the International Students of History Association. In addition to showcasing the work of students of the historical sciences, CARNIVAL provides a unique platform from which emerging scholars can develop their skills as writers, editors, reviewers and translators, and familiarize themselves with the processes integral to academic publishing. The journal is published annually online.
